Westwood Middle School Bands
Westwood Bands
Jazz Band- Jazz band is open to all students who have had at least two years of ensemble experience on their main instrument, and is a Zero Hour class (meeting at 7:00 AM, Monday-Thursday, and 8:00 AM on Friday). Students must have a solid understanding of basic music concepts, theory, and skills to progress in this ensemble. In the case of too many students in one section, the director may create an auditioned section or band to join. This group is modeled after a Big Band instrumentation that includes: Saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum set, mallets, auxiliary percussion, piano, and bass. This class will focus on jazz stylings and genre understanding, exploring many different styles within jazz. Students are required at any scheduled performances and trips throughout the year.
Advanced Band- This 7th and 8th grade band is an auditioned band. 6th and 7th grade students audition in the spring for the following year. This ensemble focuses on upper level music theory, and application of this theory through performance. Students will work toward proficiency on their instrument for solo work, as well as within the ensemble. This ensemble will generally perform more frequently than other ensembles, and will be expected to serve as role models for the younger groups. This group will generally perform level 1.5-3 grade music.
